Lyonnaise Câble, a French leader in cable television, wanted to develop a retail network for their label NOOS, a provider of internet connections as well as television and cable services. They required a soft, non-technical yet innovative image. We designed a “floating” world created by an invisibly lit luminous pastel double envelope.

Project: New store for Habitat
Surface: 2 300 m2
Role: Architect

For this Parisian store, we have highlighted the existing architecture by developing its sensuality and its domesticity to create a space half-way between a gallery space and a store. The objective was to rediscover the essence of Habitat’s beginnings dating back to Terrance Conran’s first store in the 1960’s.

At a symbolic moment in their history forty years after opening their first store in London, Habitat opened this 800 m2 store in Monte-Carlo.

Shops for Habitat  – The United Kingdom

Location: United Kingdom
Project: New store concept for Habitat
Surface: 3 000 … 5 000 m2
Role: Architect and retail consultant
Status: Completed

Since 2002, we have been engaged with Habitat in developing a new architectural concept for the group throughout Europe. This is a part of the restoration of image, architectural concept and commercial spaces. The message to the clients is “become the person you really are; celebrate individuality; welcome to the “Habitat Home”.

This project develops over two levels with a split-level central agora inscribed diagonally within the existing 1970’s shell. The architectural intention has been to further develop stunningly contrasting spatial sequences throughout the architectural experience undertaken by our clients. It recalls that sense of fun and surprise we might have experienced on visiting for the first time an inner courtyard in southern Europe. The welcoming foyer is restrained in order to prepare the visitor for the greater inner agora space. Sight lines criss-cross horizontally, diagonally and vertically throughout the project.

Shop for Habitat, Boulevard des Capucines – Paris 9 – France

Location: Paris, France
Project: Renovation of retail space
Surface: 1 700 m2
Role: Architect
Status: Completed

The refurbishment we conceived of the former ”Conran Store” as the « new Madeleine Store” for Habitat, is next to the world renowned Olympia Theatre. Key words in the brief included “not too serious”, “fun”, “a playground”, “friendly”, and “entertainment”, within this “new Home of Habitat”.

A great black glass mosaic portal welcomes clients and announces the transition with the refurbished main sales areas on two basement levels. A giant “skin” has been applied around the staircase area to harmonize the space and create a linkage between the levels, thus providing a sense of “visual quietness”, an essential quality in the new Habitat stores.
The formal “Olympia Grande Vitrine” to the right of the main entry celebrates Habitat’s presence in Haussmann’s Paris and pays homage to its esteemed neighbor. The architecture of the basement areas has been modified and the lighting has been totally changed, respecting the evolving “store concept principles”.

Shop for Habitat – Dublin – Ireland

Location: Dublin, Ireland
Project: Renovation of retail space
Surface: 3 800 m2
Role: Architect
Status: Completed

Habitat’s new store opened in Dublin city center. Its design incorporates a former 18th century Bank of Ireland banking hall as well as a 1960’s office building with entrances on both College Green and Suffolk Street.

The majestic banking hall has been restored with a floating restaurant gently inserted within.

The use of historic color palettes is prominent in the Banking Hall, with white laminated and painted fixtures contrasting with the historic ornamentation. Colors were predominantly black and white on the Suffolk Street side in order to enhance Habitat’s ‘Black Box’ concept. Strong colors were introduced to the architectural interventions at the College Green end to create a sense of warmth within the space.
The Habitat project demonstrates how older beautiful buildings can be re-used in a modern leisure and retail context. Through this project we are signaling that by simple and respectful gestures, it is possible to salute past architectural triumphs while embracing a stunning and exciting future as with all of our Habitat projects.
