Hospital Esquirol in Saint-Maurice – Paris – France

Studies carried out with Pier Carlo Bontempi
Project: Capacity studies and preliminary programming
Surface: 67 000m2
Date: 2020
Role: Architect / Urban planner

The magnificent ensemble of the Esquirol Hospital is located at the confluence of the Marne and the Seine.

Our brief is to propose a new set of functions for the “Renaissance d’un monument neoclassique exceptionnel”, carrying out feasibility and programming studies for the former Esquirol Hospital in Saint-Maurice. The main part of the program involves housing, which while respecting strict heritage codes will also meet stringent sustainability, energy and thermal conservation standards.

Built in the 19th century and composed of 18 cloisters, the hospital complex develops to either side of a central axis punctuated by a two-level courtyard and a church. A motorway now separates this monumental neoclassical complex from the river. Our project proposes to recreate the lost connection between this extensive site and the Marne River. To achieve this, a landscaped suspended park over the motorway will give access to a new river port and marina with a beach and swimming pools. Within the context of this new park, we propose to construct two new “tower blades” of mixed use and contemporary architectural expression.

Midnight in Fauboug Saint-Colomban – (77) – France

Project developed with Pier Carlo Bontempi

Project: Competition for a new district in Marne la Vallee
Status: Project

We participated in this competition with Pier Carlo Bontempi for the creation of a new residential area in the spirit of a traditional « faubourg » .

Our aim is to respect the project goals as closely as possible; we quote here from the program:

“Located outside the city walls, the houses are of simple architecture. The neighborhood does not display the wealth and elegance of buildings in the city center.

The low walls that rose up along the main roads, outside the gates, were incorporated into the city as it grew during the 19th century. Later, a suburban development was absorbed into the faubourg without changing its original character.

Here, in the new “faubourg” we do not find large country homes but rather a clear taste for the vernacular. The façades are not sophisticated, their composition instead dictated by practical needs. Only a few buildings display a hint of classical moldings, testimony to their residents’ success in their activities. In this way the desire to enrich the functional simplicity of a home with a semblance of elegance can express the attainment of a certain social standing and success.”

Our proposed project for the renovation and modernization of this winery in Bordeaux, founded in 1722, studies and considers the roots and history of this family business to provide a sound basis for its development into the future.

We analyzed the present facilities and at the client’s request proposed new ones, increasing the surface area by 3 300 m2. The most recent technologies for wine processing were included in our proposal.

We also proposed an adaptation of existing buildings, a surface area of 10 000 m2, to include facilities for wine tourism, trade, restaurants and a new administrative block, as well as a complete review of the landscaping of the whole site.
