The influential and internationally renowned Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco asked us to design his Parisian refuge within an abandoned building on the Right Bank. Our role was to rediscover the original soul, the genius loci that had been smothered over time by generations of random interventions. Through this process we rediscovered the brilliance of the initial masters’ work. This was combined with our client’s own requirements to produce a place of infinite surprises which he now uses as a studio.

Mixed Use Development – Angers (49) – France

Location: Angers, France
Project: Mixed use development in the city centre
Surface: 30 000 m2
Role: Architect
Status: Project

Our proposal for this important mixed-use development project in the historic centre of Angers in France’s Loire valley combines range of new functions — retail, housing, hotel, shopping center — into the existing urban fabric.

Working with the city’s preservation department we were able to maintain the striking architectural qualities of this site which comprises a 1930’s post office and several historic bank buildings, as well as a cinema built in the 1920’s. We linked the renovation projects together by covering rue Franklin Roosevelt (120m x 15m) with a state-of-the-art engineered arcade inspired by 19th and 20th century European shopping arcades.
Pedestrian bridges connect the various of levels and functions of this unusual inner-city mixed-use urban preservation and development project.

We renovated and restructured this 1924 townhouse built by Henri Deglane, one of the architects of the Grand Palais in Paris, creating a fourth level of living space where there had originally been three. The contemporary language of our new design for what had been the basement area intentionally creates a strong contrast with the feel of the three original levels. The new space includes family areas, a pool, a sauna, a gym and wine cellars; all now connect directly to the garden, newly redesigned to reinforce the visual link with an adjacent park, the Parc Ranelagh.
All external renovations were realized in close cooperation with local historic preservation authorities (Architectes des Bâtiments de France)..

All aspects of the project were approved, and the necessary permits granted by the French Heritage services, approved by the Architectes des Bâtiments de France.

In this very small space, our client required a project containing three bedrooms, a loft style living space with a modern, fun-spirit to it. Notwithstanding the very limited number of existing windows we developed this small Parisian paradise, incorporating within it an old chimney- stack which was discovered on the site.
